# Data editing and management system (PaaS)

The data editing and management system pattern is available as a platform as a service (PaaS) based deployment using ArcGIS Location Platform.

ArcGIS Location Platform provides market-leading location services to you as a PaaS managed and delivered by Esri. ArcGIS Location Platform provides capabilities that span the data and services/logic tiers, with mapping libraries, APIs, SDKs, and no-code options that give you full control over the presentation tier. Built on world-class cloud architecture and managed by IT and geographic information system (GIS) experts, ArcGIS Location Platform offers flexible location-focused PaaS for software developers, businesses, and organizations that need to bring location innovation into their products, solutions, and systems.

# Base architecture

The architecture principles, components, and interactions for a data editing and management system deployed as PaaS are fundamentally the same as those in the [SaaS deployment pattern](/en/framework/system-patterns/data-editing-and-management/deployment-patterns/as-saas.md). The main architectural difference is that presentation tier components (such as applications) will be created, hosted, and delivered by your organization.

# Capabilities

The base capabilities of the data editing and management system deployed as PaaS are described very similar to those in the [SaaS deployment pattern](/en/framework/system-patterns/data-editing-and-management/deployment-patterns/as-saas.md). Some notable differences include:

- Data interoperability and transformation using [Data Pipelines](https://doc.arcgis.com/en/data-pipelines/latest/get-started/about-data-pipelines.htm) is not supported.
- Data distribution using partnered or distributed collaboration is not supported.
- None of the extended capabilities described in the [SaaS deployment pattern](/en/framework/system-patterns/data-editing-and-management/deployment-patterns/as-saas.md) are supported with the PaaS deployment pattern.

See the [capability comparison](/en/framework/system-patterns/data-editing-and-management/selecting-a-deployment-pattern.md#capability-comparison) for different data editing and management system deployment patterns for more information. Additionally, for a comparison of capabilities provided by ArcGIS Location Platform at different pricing tiers, and ArcGIS Online (SaaS), see the [products, subscriptions, and accounts](https://developers.arcgis.com/documentation/mapping-apis-and-services/deployment/accounts/) page of the Esri Developer site.

# Considerations

The architectural and operational considerations for the data editing and management system deployed as PaaS are described very similar to those in the [SaaS deployment pattern](/en/framework/system-patterns/data-editing-and-management/deployment-patterns/as-saas.md). Some notable differences include:

- ArcGIS Location Platform has a different [service level agreement (SLA)](https://www.esri.com/content/dam/esrisites/en-us/media/legal/referenced-files/service-level-agmt-arcgis-platform.pdf) from ArcGIS Online.
- ArcGIS Location Platform does not offer the [Premium Feature Data Store](https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/premium-feature-data-store/buy) capability.
- Not all observability options available in ArcGIS Online are available with ArcGIS Location Platform.
- ArcGIS Location Platform does not offer hosted [ArcGIS Notebooks](https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-notebooks/workspace-options/arcgis-online), though data management and other administrative automation is possible using the [ArcGIS API for Python](https://developers.arcgis.com/python/).

See [general considerations](/en/framework/system-patterns/data-editing-and-management/selecting-a-deployment-pattern.md#general-considerations) for data editing and management system deployment patterns (including PaaS) for more information.
